Purple Poppy Day 2025

Purple Poppy Day 2025

Purple Poppy Day is an annual  commemoration to honour the many animals that have been called upon to help in numerous military endeavours throughout the years.

A commemoration was hosted on Monday 24th February by our sub-Branch at the Simpson Memorial. The service was attended by Vice-Consul (Education) Dr Cem Gencoglu, Consulate-General of the Republic of Türkiye, and Lieutenant Colonel Denis Moore (retired) of Friends of Gallipoli.

During the ceremony, the flag of the Republic of Türkiye was presented to the War Veterans Village by Dr Gencoglu and raised alongside the Australian National flag at the Simpson Memorial to demonstrate the friendship between Türkiye and Australia.

The sub-Branch made a presentation of books titled ‘Wear a Purple Poppy’ to student representatives of each of the four local schools, including Wheeler Heights Public and Narrabeen Lakes Public.

National Day for War Animals, affectionately known as Purple Poppy Day, is held on 24 February each year. For more information, visit the Australian War Memorial website(Click on bold type)
