General Meeting 11th September 2025

General Meeting 11th September 2025

Following a brief business session of the sub-Branch we welcomed a number of village residents who had accepted our invitation to hear our guest speaker. We hope to have regular diverse guest speakers in future as a complement to the regular service-oriented speakers.

Two new service members, Bram Pollack and Steve Gambley, were inducted by our President Geoff Seis.

Our Dispatches editor Ralph Clark introduced our guest speaker, John Vaughan OAM, who is a renowned vexillographer (an expert in flags)

John has been based in his showroom at Northbridge for the past 35 years, where he has designed and produced many flags for a myriad of uses, yet he has a strong affinity for flags of the sea, regions and cities. His knowledge of all matters historic is extensive, which obviously explains his background as the former CEO of the Australian Historical Society. John is also a founding member of the Australian Maritime Museum and a life member of the Sydney Heritage Fleet. John was awarded the OAM in 2021.

John brought with him numerous Australian flags, some of which are shown in the photographs below. He gave a brief history of each flag Also shown is a portion of the base of original flagpole erected at the Quarantine Station at North Head.
